Cultivating Emptional Balance: Weekend Workshop with Doug Veenhof

Friday, Nov 6, 7.30-9pm
Saturday, Nov 7, 1.30-7pm
Sunday, Nov 8, 12-6pm

“If you could have one wish, what would it be?” someone asked H.H. the Dalai Lama. “For the world to be happy,”he replied. “And key to this is learning how to deal with our emotions.”

A key to understanding emotions is the basic fact that during much of an emotional episode, we are literally not conscious. The introspective training of meditation can be used to target the dark areas of the emotional-episode timeline to balance motivation, attention and world-view, resulting in emotional balance and authentic happiness.

This workshop will explore this meditative training by examining 7 universal emotions: their function, how they are triggered, how they are experienced, and how they can be either constructively or destructively expressed.

The workshop is based on a program called Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB), which was developed at the Dalai Lama’s request by Paul Ekman, one of the most widely respected researchers on the psychology of emotion and B. Alan Wallace, a renowned Buddhist scholar, practitioner, and author of 40 books. CEB has a highly regarded team of science advisors and was the subject of a large research study and two clinical trials with documented positive results.

Sliding Scale: $30-$40 per class or $110-$130 for 3-day Workshop

Please pay at the highest level of the sliding scale that you can afford. This helps us make sure that those who pay less can attend. No one is turned away for lack of funds, work-study is available.

Doug Veenhof is a certified Cultivating Emotional Balance trainer and teaches meditation around the world, including at the latest 5-week CEB Teacher Training in Australia. He has been studying and practicing meditation for 25 years, is a former mountain guide, an award-winning journalist, and author.

How to Live Well in a Messy World

Mondays Sept 14 - Oct 19 from 7:30pm - 9:30pm

We have often been told that to be physically and spiritually happy, we need to create the karma for it. But knowing how to follow that advice isn't easy in a world that requires hard choices. And while it’s important to clean up our karma, ultimately, karma is the problem and not the solution. In this course, we will use one of the world’s great spiritual classics – the Bhagavad Gita – to learn how to both pay attention to karma and also surpass it, while staying grounded in, and connected to, our goals and our joy.

From Victimhood to Mastery: Freedom from the Cycle of Suffering

Mondays, March 2 - April 6, 7:30 - 9:30 pm with Lauren Benjamin

All of life's problems come from misunderstanding why things really happen to us, and the unending ‘chain of pain’ created by that mistake. Fixing that confusion is possible and is the key to authentic happiness. Spiritual master Nagarjuna – who is often referred to as the second Buddha – uses the map of the profound "Twelve Links of Dependent Arising" within the Wheel of Life to describe the cycle in which we are ensnared, as well as the route out.

After spending 26 chapters negating the most cherished beliefs of the Buddhist orthodoxy, in his text, "Root Verses of the Middle Way," Nagarjuna affirms that we do indeed experience samsara due to these causal links and that nirvana is possible, by undoing what we’ve done.
